Tyra Johnston

Hello! I’m Tyra Johnston and I'm a Kindergarten teacher at Ann Arbor Open.

Kindergarten is a special time full of learning and playing, exploring academic and artistic interests, and building relationships within our classroom community! In Kindergarten we explore all aspects of academic and social-emotional growth.

I’ve been teaching at Ann Arbor Open for over 25 years, mostly in Kindergarten and 1st-2nd multiage classrooms (with a dash of 4th-5th-6th!).  Originally from New York City, I also went to an Open School! I came to U of M to study English Literature and French. I then went to the University of Pennsylvania for my Master’s degree before returning to Ann Arbor to begin my teaching career.

My daughter, Astrid, went through AAO and Pioneer High School, and is now at MSU in their RCAH program.  My husband Christopher Becker works in the youth department of the Ann Arbor District library - you might have seen him at story time!

In my spare time I enjoy reading and crafts, traveling and visiting my family back home, biking and gardening.
